You have to take the instrument cluster out of the dash, or at least loosen it enough to get to the two bulbs, which are placed directly behind the display of the edu.
Two screws in the upper corners hold the instrument cluster in place, furthermore the speedo cable (on older models) and some connector plugs have to be removed (pulled) out. They slide back in easily, but make notes on which one goes where.
To check if it is the bulbs before pulling everything apart you can illuminate the edu with a flashlight from the outside ('frontlighting' it instead of the normal backlighting by the bulbs)
If the lcd-digits and the computer still work, and only the bulbs are out, the digits can be seen (very weakly) and item displayed can be changed.
At least that's the way it is on my '86 9k....
