>> Robert, was you comparison between RP and Mobil 1 w/ a Mobil Sythetic Product.
It was between two RP racing products, two street, Mobil 1, and Castrol Syntec 5w30.
>> Mobil 1's USA product is the their "Mobil 1® Tri-Synthetic Series" available in several grades. The sales poop looks good.
In this area, I've only seen 5w30, 10w30, and 15w50.
>> I checked out RP's stuff at oiltown.com and their main site. It strikes me that RP may not be keeping up w/ the R&D side of the Oil Business (as they don't seem clear on if they are synthic or not), and Mobil's new synthetics may be better.
The most recent tests I've seen between the two products are at least one year old. RP's street and racing oils are classed as full synthetics, though the street oil has a small amount of fossil carrier oil, apparently as a suspension medium for additives. This was verified by a friend who asked an RP engineer via email. All RP base stocks are PAO synthetic.
RP doesn't go out of their way to promote their product. They feel their oils are superior to everything else on the market and feel that this fact alone will sell oil. It apparently does, because they seem to be doing quite well. I was shocked to see a small ad in R&T one month, but that may have been submitted by a distributor.
>> I am starting to conclude that my Castol Sytec 5-50 is way better then then regular fossil lube, but a move to Mobil 1, or RP would be the BEST. I don't have any testimonials from people I feel I can trust (like this group) on Amsoil.
I don't think you'd be wrong by using any of those mentioned above. I decided on RP based on what I felt was best for my applications. For the record, I use Castrol GTX 20w50 in my '66 Corvette, mostly because of a possibly irrational paranoia of putting something so utterly state-of-the-art in a 34-year-old engine, plus the fact that it's only driven maybe 500 miles per year anyway. OTOH, my Harley gets a combo of 20w50 RP and RP Nitro-50, a full-race product designed for nitro-burning dragsters. The Aero, as I said, gets 15w40.
Personally, I'd opt for M1 or RP over Syntec. It's a decent product, as far as I've been able to assess, but not quite up to the levels of the others. If you've been running fossil for more than, say, 25k miles--be sure to shorten your change interval (3k) for at least one change. If the odometer reading looks like the national debt, I'd do it two or three times. FWIW, Amsoil makes an excellent product, but it is very difficult to obtain, at least in this area. In fact, no one to my knowledge sells the stuff in the Baton Rouge area. You can buy from their website, but at retail prices plus shipping makes it much more expensive than the others.
