5th gear gone???!!!

While going down the highway in 5th gear in my 1988 Saab 9000 turbo 5-speed, suddenly 5th gear is gone!? The shifter is still in the same position, but it acts like its in nuetral. 1st-4th and reverse still work fine but not 5th. Putting it into 5th is just like taking it out of gear. I've checked the linkage between the shifter and the transmission, but it looks OK and moves fine. Anyone know of anything else to check to see if the transmission is toast? Has anyone else experienced this? What's the fix?
