My sensor went with 170.000km's on the odo.
As my '92 2.3 CST doesn't have TCS, there's no limp home mode.
The symptoms came from one day to another, and got immediately
worse.Only 10-20km's possible before engine died again.
If the engine restarted everything was absolutely fine for the next
10 km's. Just had to switch key off and then on.
If the crank sensor doesn't give a valid rpm signal to the ECU, the ECU
immediately cuts off the engine because it doesn't know when to fire
the spark-plugs.
The engine isn't worth a dime when the crank sensor is completely out.
On my '92 model I had to remove the belt and pulley. The crank-sensor
is actually located behind the pulley on this model.
I memory serves me right, the newer models from '94 on, have a plug-in
crank-sensor which you can remove without removing belt & pulley.
AfaIk the harmonic balancer are not concerned in this swap.
Bye
Yves D.
