just recently i got a whiff of coolant inside the car, thanks to all the info on here i knew exactly what it was.
went to the local megaparts bigbox store (pepboys) and instead of finding the usual Bar's Leaks that i'm familiar with, the pelletized liquid that looks like it was drained from a spitoon, only thing i could find was a brown powderized version. Since the car was warm, and i was making 100 mile trip to LA, i decided to go for it.
i DID feel better about putting the powderized version in my cooling system, i've never been a fan of most additives in general, and dropping big ol' chunks of stuff into the cooling system makes me itchy. Short version, dumped it into a warm running engine, drove on up to LA, got out and inspected the cooling system, water circulating well, although it DID turn my freshly changed coolant into a color that made the coolant look like it 100K miles on it. It did take some time for it to eliminate the coolant smell, i work from home and some days the car doesn't even get started, so it could be the number of hot/cold cycles the engine has to go thru before it works...All i know is, it worked for me and kept me from having to tear into it!
