I had a similar problem with my 88 9000 Turbo. Everything would occasionally go dead when I was driving along, but mostly it happened when I tried to start the car - it would take several turns of the key to get the dash lights to come on and the car to start.
The culprit turned out to be the ignition switch (behind the ignition barrel)which is a fairly easy fix. You need to unscrew 4 torx screws to remove the plastic moulding around the ignition switch and the lower half of the steering wheel. Then undo the 2 small torx screws holding the ignition switch to the barrel (these are easy to spot as they have red heads). Then just disconnect the switch from the attached wiring loom and replace. Clean all the contacts with switch cleaner while you're in there.
I had a spare from my parts car that I threw on so it didn't cost anything, but I don't imagine they're too expensive to buy new.
