I think this sounds a really good buy, depending on price of course! By 1994, just about all the engine modifications had been made, and it may well have decent wheels or other goodies. Don't be put off too much by comments on the auto gearboxes – any gearbox, auto or manual, can let you down if it's not serviced properly. Lots of things can be adjusted at service time, or fixed without removing the box. When you check the service record, look for at least one, preferably two auto fluid changes on top of all the other stuff. Whe you drive it, feel for early gear-changes, jerky ones or whatever – but frankly at that mileage nothing should be showing up as a problem. My last auto gearbox (previous car) lasted about 150k miles. More power certainly equals shorter life but you should certainly expect well over 100k.
Any model starting with CS will have 5 doors, CDs are four-doors with separate boot (sorry, trunk). I should think of the CS/CSE thing as a question of trim levels, and check out the engine specification separately. My 1993 CSE has memory seats, sunroof, wooden dash, rear spoiler, leather and so forth. It also has 16" Aero wheels and sports exhaust but I don't think these are because it's a CSE – someone specified them as extras. Depends what's important to you: CS models are well specified by most standards and my wife claims to hate the leather seats anyway.
As regards engine – here in the UK we see CSEs with low-pressure 2-litre turbos, and full-turbo 2.3 litre CS models. Things may be different your side of the pond. Low-pressure cars can be souped up to full specification quite cheaply if required, anyway.
Last night, I drove some friends back home. One of them normally drives a Mercedes 320 coupé, and he said the Saab felt like a one-year-old car. I was flattered, but we were on the way back from a wine-tasting so he may have been somewhat anaesthetised (not me, I promise!).
