I have a '92 9kt and I have never seen that bearing to fail. I have
had to replace intermediate shafts when I was given the wrong bearing
support bracket during an engine swap. The support bracket and bearing
should be taken out as a whole. Undo the nut that's threaded onto the
bolt that sticks up from the motor mount. You'll have to remove the
axle and CV joint from the driver cup, which means undoing the ball
joint on the passengers side - only 3 bolts and some nasty prying.
Once the bolt is taken off that support bearing bracket, you can
carefully jack up the engine, with a board to disperse the load,
from under the cast oil pan. Just bring it up enough to clear the
bolt on the motor mount - I can't remember if I disconnected the
upper 'dogbone' mount, it might be necessary to disconnect that, also.
There are three other long bolts that fasten the support bracket to the
engine which will have to be removed. Now, with a rubber mallet, tap
on the bracket from the transaxle side - the only thing holding it in
place is a guide pin on the engine and a rubber seal on the aluminum
tube that the intermediate shafts runs through. Once the support
bracket and driver are freed, take it to a bench, remove the snap ring
that holds the splined end of the driver cup and bearing and press it
out. I'm sure my directions aren't the best - I'd refer to the Haynes
manual, but I'm at work and won't be home till later this evening.
