Your motor has 123k on it. Ya, you can have the head redone
for 3 or 400 bucks. Are you going to take it off and install it yourself?
I'd be willing to wager, I could pull and replace an engine quicker,
especially if I were replacing the whole drivetrain. What are you
going to do if your reconditioned head gives you the type of
compression that your rings crap-out? I've had it happen to
me more than once, albeit, never with a Saab. But, it is a possibility,
eh? The conservative in me doesn't like taking those kind of risks,
and that's why I'd go the engine route, in which like Yaofeng
notes, only a '91-'93 will mate to that transaxle. On a more
positive note, I've noticed that engine prices have fallen a bit
at the salvage yards around here in MA. Because there isn't
a lot of demand for Saab engines, the salvage yards, like Greenleaf,
which get a lot of Saabs and V*lvos (I'd also wager they have the
largest collection of late model V*lvos anywhere - there's got to
be 2-300 sitting in their yard), have a lot of engines sitting on their
shelves collecting dust!
