speedometer not working...any suggestions?

I've only got another 400 miles to go and I will be at home again...but sadly I won't have my cruise control to help me--my
speedo stopped working today. I was lucky to be near a friend who has a few spare 9000 parts but we just couldn't figure it
out. For some reason, the gear inside the tranny spins freely when according to reason and the three other trannies we had
there, this shouldn't be the case. Figuring the gear to be pressed onto the drive shaft, we wanted to see what it really had going
on and ended up taking a tranny completely apart and never succeeded in getting to that part of the mechanism. I can't imagine
this part being a problem area as it is a metal piece and not plastic like, say, the 900s, but I just can't see having to get a new
transmission in order to have a working speedometer. There has got to be a method for reparation that falls short of that
remedie. It's in an 87 9000 Turbo and I could really use some help on this one.
