The tranny shifts into 4th around 45 mph. 45 in 4th is pretty low revs in my opinion. Great if you're just cruising, but no good if you need a squirt of power to get out of the way.
Basically the only difference is that in D, the car will shift into 4th above 45. If the car is shifting into 4th and this bothers you, then leave it in 3. It won't hurt anything. All you have to do is REMEMBER to put it into D if you get up much above 60 for any length of time. The fact that you'll be at about 4000 RPM should be a clue.
You can reuse the tranny filter if you wish. I would clean it with alcohol and let it dry before installing. I wouldn't use any detergent. After all, you're not trying to degrease it - the purpose of the filter is to catch particles, not filter out impurities. I would worry that anything else would leave a residue that could get into the fluid. Alcohol is fine, or just buy a new filter (about $15).
There is a difference between Dex II and III - III is a newer formulation with different additives. Dex II can be hard to find. Dex III will work fine in the ZF.
