The harmonic balancer (main pulley) probably did separate. It does happen. Replacing it isn't a big deal, with the proper tools and some patience it's about a 2-3 hour task, depending on your experience.
While you are in there, replace the main crankshaft seal and the oil pump O-ring. Replace both belts (serpentine and AC). The serpentine belt was probably damaged when it came off. Before you order any parts, spin the serpentine belt idler pulley with your hand, and see if the bearings feel OK. If it feels wobbly, replace it. Go to some of the places that advertise on this BB for decent prices (I like Sobstory) - you'll save $$.
The Townsend site has some good pointers on replacing the harmonic balancer and oil pump O-ring. Look in the 900 Engine section for tips. The 9000 is the same as the 900, but MUCH easier. I used the Townsend 'starter motor' method to loosen the main pulley bolt. Make sure you've got a decent torque wrench so you can tighten the oil pump and main pulley bolts properly. The Haynes 9000 manual will also help.
You access the harmonic balancer by removing the fender inner liner. Once in there, also give the water pump, alternator, and motor mounts a good looking over. When I did my main seal (the balancer was OK), I ended up doing the motor mounts while I was at it.
Good luck, and let us know how it goes.
