It'd be highly unusual for a stock car (IE not one like mine with a power hungry stereo and higher wattage lights) to have a problem with a 13 month old alternator. But, if your light is indeed coming on, there's little else suspect, and your voltage reading does seem to indicate some sort of problem. I've never had that much of a swing between idle and running, typically it's about 0.5V, 1.0V at the most. Plus, I think you have the 115 amp alternator in your 9000, which should be even less stressed than my 80 (or is it 85?) amp alternator, at idle.
Presume the shop put in a rebuilt unit, as opposed to new? Perhaps whoever rebuilt it didn't do a very thorough job, though I find it sad that your shop will not honor the one year warranty. If it's really been operating in this mode for a couple months, and you haven't had a drained battery yet, you're doing well. There isn't a huge risk to other components at this point, other than the battery, but if you're getting 14.2V while running, that's plenty. I believe you can replace the diode pack, but it involves taking apart the alternator and unsoldering and resoldering, unless I'm mistaken. Certainly money saving, but not time saving.
