One of my 86 9kt's has a similar problem but in my case at least it is easily overcome. It seems that my regulator has a problem that requires a certain RPM before it will cut in and do its job. In my case this is about 3k rpm. Whenever I go on a fuel economy binge my engine never sees this sort of rapidity - and that is how the problem came to light. If for some reason the engine stops and needs to be restarted the 3k rpm must again be achieved or else the car will run on battery alone, the display will show an ever decreasing voltage, and the engine will eventually stop.
Try it. With the voltage display selected, give the engine a burst of rpm. If luck is with you and your problem is the same as mine, the display will start climbing to 13 point something, and everything will be well! Good luck.
