Rear Eye Level Stop Light..

You know, I don't quite know what all the Fuss is about..
Here in Australia the the Eye Level Stop Light was not introduced till 91. It was made mandatory in between models of all makes of cars and I don't think it makes much of a difference to the looks of a particular car.
The only type I think that doesn't quite look right are the ones that are mounted on the roof. Mazda hatches are sort of carved into the rear hatch and look quite good. Ones that are part of rear spoilers also look ok..
But all in all, the most common type are behind the rear window, on the Parcel Shelf.
I don't think they detract from the appearance but, the Question is, Do they prevent rear end collisions. I for one think they do.
Although My Saab does not have a Rear Eye Level Stop Light, I am not going out of my way to put one on. I have seen to many after market ones Melt from the Sun and look quite ugly. I also think that aftermarket ones are dangerous if not fitted properly.
Can you imagine an Improperly fitted Eye Level Brake light Staying in place in an accident. I can't. But I can imagine it Hurtling toward a Passenger Or Driver at a Great Rate Of Knots and Hitting them in the Head.
So I for one would not like to see anyone fitting their own Eye Level Stop Light, Unless they knew exactly what they were doing and mounted it safely.

Just another 2 cents worth.
