How to attach fuel line

OK it was bound to happen. I changed out my bosch fuel pump this last weekend ('88 9ks) and while I was fighting to get the uppermost bolt off the top of the pump I cut the fuel line / hose. Not a problem I thought, simply snip it cleanly a bit further down and reattach to the metal ring type grommet that has the protruding nipple. Only the plastic hose is hard and not particularly flexible hence it didn't want to slip over the nipple of the metal grommet thing. It put up a fight but with enough swearing and brute force it went on...BUT.. on starting the car fuel starting spraying out of the join twixt metal and plastic. It looks like the plastic tube needs to be softened with a heat gun or something, pushed onto the metal nipple and then allowed to cool/contract to give a nice tight seal. Is this the case?? I'm nervous about messing with heat guns near to fumes. Is there another way?
