Cat replacement

I have a 1990 2.3 non turbo auto, which was one of the first cars to be supplied into the UK with a catalytic converter. Does anyone out have any experience of removing the cat. Will it help improve fuel consumption, will I get more power and will any adjustments or modifications have to be made to the engine management system.
Our yearly 'MOT' test only requires cats to be fitted on cars manufactured after 1993
Any advice would be greatly appreciated
