I recently read some posts on this board about octane requirements for the 9kT. I've got an '88 and have been using the high priced stuff for 226,000 miles (since new). With premium gas selling for close to $2/gal (ok, maybe that's cheap compared to you guys overseas but it's still too much!) I decided to see how the car would fare on 87 octane.

After 5 tanks all I can say is the only difference I can tell is a few more dollars left in my wallet. Power still appears to be the same. Boost gauge will still barely hit the "red zone" on occasion. Mileage appears to be the same or possibly slightly improved. I've lugged up hills in 5th gear listening for ping but don't hear anything.

Am I fooling myself into thinking premium gas is just a waste of money on my 9kT? Am I saving a couple of bucks now only to risk a major engine failure? Just because I don't hear ping, could I still be getting detonation and not know it? I assume the 88 9kT has a knock sensor. I guess it's possible it's not working and that's why I'm still seeing full boost using 87.

I really enjoy saving 15 to 20 cents a gallon, but not if I'm destroying my engine.
