I would not bother to replace the head gasket. If you aren't losing coolant and the oil and coolant aren't cross-cantaminating each other then it isn't really necessary. I suspect your oil seepage is coming from the drivers side of the engine where the head slightly over hangs the block. This is a hard area to seal and a commin seepage spot. No big deal, and it doesn't really indicate head gasket failure in the future. There also a possibility that the valve cover gasket is leaking instead of the head gasket. This is common too and they are easy to get mixed up. Again, no big deal, but the valve cover gasket is very easy to replace.
The dealer is probably right about the synchro. Though the newer gearboxes (like yours) are better the design in general is a bit weak. Normally 2nd gear gets rough first and I would think either would be going bad yet on '96 but its certainly possible. How many miles are on it, by the way? Since your car has a drain plug, I would certain try replacing the gear box oil (conventional 10W30) or consider doing the procedure to switch over to Saab's synthetic fluid (and ONLY Saab's synthetic fluid as many believe these boxes are very fluid sensitive.) This may or may not help, but it's easy to try and much less expensive than a new synchro. Many of us on this board tend to live with the bad synchros, they are quite common, though more so in early cars.
Good luck!
Craig
