Battery Question

My battery died recently, and I borrowed a battery from a old junker with a similar sized-engine, though the battery was a bit smaller. I thought that it might get my car started enough to drive out and replace it. Not only did it start, it started quickly and all voltage came up fine, which made me wonder why I should even get a new one when I could just use this one. Now my question is, can I do any damage to my car by using this wrong-sized battery, provided I can mount it securely? Thanks in advance.
