Actually, it's a chain, not a belt. The general sense thet I get is that if an engine design is such that the valves can hit the pistons if the belt/chain fails, then the manufacturer has the good sense to make it a chain. If there is no chance of interference in the case of a failure, then they use a belt. That's a sensible policy to follow.

In the case of the Saab 4 cylinder, valves will get bent when the timing chain breaks at pretty much any speed (you just cannot react fast enough to stop the damage). Much to my surprise, I've not heard of any piston damage in such an event, only bent valves (as if that's not enough!). I had a cam gear slip once in an Alfa. The noise was terifying, but it only bent a couple of valves. From what I've heard, you can expect to replace about 8 valves. It's certainly a good idea to replace the guides while you're at it, as well as all valve seals and a complete valve job (have valves and seats ground).
