Are the lifters only noisey at start up or all the time? Start up is pretty normal, especially in very cold weather or with thinner oils, otherwise it might be worth looking into.Do they do it just at low RPM or at higher revs too? How many miles? It's not really normal to have any lifter problems, especially several going bad at ones.
Before you replace the lifters you might want to ensure that the top end is getting enough oil. The lifters aren't pressure fed, there are just small pipes and nipples which dump oil on them. These plastic nipples can age and crack easily which may mean the lifters won't get enough oil. It's easy to check these just buy pulling the valve cover and removing and inspecting the assembly. The nipples and rails and easy to pull apart and inspect, but they are very delicate so it might be worth to have extras on hand (they're also very cheap.) I'd blow through everything and make sure its clean and reassemble. The new nipples also made a tighter fit for me. Definetly worth trying before anything more extreme. By the way, the payment chick at the dealer was pretty amussed when my invoice came up as "2 nipples."
What viscosity oil are you running? If a thin 10W30 synthetic, then it might be worth trying a 10W40. Have you had your oil pressure checked? Probably not a problem, especially with the Saab oil pump, but might be worth looking into. I can't imagine it being hard to change the lifters as they are visible with the valve cover off, but you do have to take the cams out. They need to be torqued very percisely when reinstalled and it's important to get the aligment right when reinstalling them. I'd definetly check the oil feed assembly first and visual inspect the cams/lifters for unusual wear, etc.
Let us know how it goes.
