I did the complete job on my 92t(2.3)w/120k after being told it was beyond a roll in chain. It also was diagnosed by ear. I almost did just the roll in and tensioner, but I'm very glad I opted for the full job. The balance chain gears were in terible shape. I opted to change everything(all gears, both chains, all guides, both tensioners)while it was apart. The cam gears looked good but I replaced them anyway. Unfortunately it seems most timing chain problems are balance chain related. The only way to truly diagnose the balance chain is to take the timing cover off. Thats why you need an EXPERIENCED trustworthy Saab expert to listen to it. But it's alot cheaper to do the roll in chain and tensioner and see if the noise goes away.By the way, after I put everything back together I discovered my harmonic balancer was bad. Should have checked it before I did the chains! It took me about 20 hours total. I also replaced the waterpump which I really didn't need to do.
One quick tip- Townsend says to fill the oil to the "x" on max on the dip stick. This should keep more oil on the chains.
Good luck! John
