The old 900 was Saab's only car when it was originally designed. The new style 900 was designed to be a cheaper entry level car that would complete on the level of say a Jetta. Unfortunately it ended up costing quite a bit more to produce than antisipated and ended up being much closer in price to the 9000. The 9000 was designed to be Saab's top of the line car from the start('86). We've had several examples of each in our family and we all feel that the 9000 is head and shoulders above the new style 900. If you can find an old Consumers Report from when the 9000 was still being built, they say the same thing and rated the 9000 as being more reliable. Even though they share a lot of mechanical components there is a difference. The only fans of the new style 900 are people who've never owned a 9000 (or they had a ratty one). The 9000 is bigger and heavier though, so the 900 might feel a little sportier.
