I, too, am deeply confused about what you switched. As I remember, there is an inner and an outer brake pad. The inner pad has metal 'tangs' on the back to fit into the piston face. The outer pad is just held in place. I cannot imagine that you can swap the caliper from side to side, but stranger things have happened.
If you just changed the pads, then no bleeding should be required if the brakes were OK before. However, if you opened the system - such as pulling a caliper off (to switch?), then the system needs bleeding. Bleeding, however, shouldn't affect the ABS light.
The ABS sensor is embedded in the hub. The hub/caliper assembly has just a hydraulic line and a cable running to it. Follow the cable to the ABS sensor. It just bolts into the hub, and I think there is no adjustment for it in 1988. Alignment is made by how the sensor and hub are machined. Inside the hub on the axle is a metal ring with teeth, and that is what the sensor picks up. If the teeth are crammed with crap, it could cause a problem.
Most likely, the problem is in the sensor or the cable. Sensors do fail, and cables most definately fail. You may not have touched the sensor, but I'll bet the cable to it tooks some knocks. The ABS system checks the resistance of the sensor, and also signal amplitude. If the cable has been overly flexed or kinked, or the insulation broken, this could cause an ABS light. I'm pretty sure you can have a dealer read out the ABS code in 1988, and if it's a sensor, will point to the offending sensor. If it is a bad sensor or cable, all you can do is replace it.
