I've had a chance to look at the damage through the 2" (really 2"x3" on closer inspection) hole in the crankcase. I've been trying to photograph it, but can't get the angle I need to show the damage.

What I found:

1. The 2"x3" crankcase hole mentioned previously
2. A second hole in the sump through which I can view an oil-covered cat (not the furry kind).
3. A crankshaft journal with no con-rod attached to it.
4. A nice clean sump with no sludge in it after 140K miles of dealer servicing using synthetic oil.


My analysis of what might have happened goes like this:

The big-end bearing cap left the con-rod and smashed through the sump, followed milliseconds later by the con-rod smashing a hole in the block. The bearing cap hit the cat, causing bits of the cat's internals to exit via the exhaust - the glowing bits I saw in my mirror.

Some oil left the engine via the hole in the crankcase, but most of it drained through the hole in the sump onto the cat, causing a huge volume of smoke and the fire that burned itself out when all the oil had been used up.

The bad news is, this suggests that although there is no external sign of damage, the cat is probably scrap as well.
