Had the same entertaining problem with my 87 9kt. The low beams would intermittendly switch themselves off, but high beams worked. Usually switching to high and then back to low would restore low beams (for a while), or failing that, pulling out the adjustable steering wheel and moving it back again would also do the trick (obviously NOT a good idea while driving. . ). Then checked all the usual stuff (relay, switch) but was told by my indie mechanic to check the terminals that connect the wiring harness to the multi pin at the back of the dip switch. This seems to be an apparent weak spot on this model and contact terminals can melt. A crack in the plastic shrowd is often a giveaway. Sure enough, the plastic holder that keeps all the terminals in place had melted on mine and I merely replaced all the bad terminals with the correct sized ones from an elctronics store and junked the melted plastic holder. Just keep the individual terminals in the correct order. Cured the fault on mine at very little cost.
Good luck.
Martin, B.C.
