Is the car a turbo? If so, check the hooter valve (black plastic cylinder with two fat hoses one thin) to the intake manifold (thin). Pull the thin hose off the intake side and suck on it. It should hold vacuum - if not, replace the hooter valve, because the diaphram is leaking. Next, remove the right front turnsignal light and peer in. You'll see the charcoal canister for the evaporative recovery system. Make sure all the hoses there are still connected well.
Make sure the throttle position switch is operating properly. It measure throttle position, and should switch just as the throttle closes. (I can't off the top of my head remember if the switch is closed or open at idle). The switch tells the FI if the throttle is opened and takes the engine off idle. Of course, make sure the throttle plate closes all the way. Pull off the big hose and clean around the throttle plate with a lint-free cloth and some carb cleaner.
As to tranny fluid, which transmission do you have - auto or manual? For the auto, get a good quality Dextron II or III. I prefer Castrol, but that's just my personal bias.
