There is no disadvantage in having the switch installed, other than the cost. I'd get that quote a little more exact - make sure 'a couple of hundred dollars' doesn't turn into $298. The task involves taking out a blank switch, and installing a switch and a very short harness. Figure about $70 for the switch and harness at dealer prices. Two wires from the switch are spliced in to a nearby harness to provide a ground and power for the light in the switch. A third wire is routed down to the controller box and stuck into the connector. I make it to be about 45 minutes work.
The problem you were having is that the TCS was a little too effective. When it detected any wheelspin, it clamped on the brakes, and you go nowhere.
