Idler pulley rplacement/belt tensioner

I replaced the serprntine belt tensioner a couple of months ago. Symptoms for a bad one are excessive vibration/rattle when starting out in low or reverse, excessive bounce in the tensioner pulley (observed while the engine is idling) and lack of resistance in the first part of the travel when pushing the pulley toward the rear (as in when removing the belt).
I've just replaced my idler pulleys as well. I think they wore prematurely due to the bad tensioner allowing too much belt vibration. Something was screeching on cold mornings and since the idler pulleys felt a little rough, I thought they might be the source. As far as I can tell, that was the problem.
What's bothering me is that when I try to loosen the left-hand threaded idler pully retaining bolt, the tensioner separates. It's happened twice. Amazingly, it doesn't appear to hurt the tensioner; I just jam it back together by pushing back on the idler pulley bolt and the tensioner appears to be fine. I'm not real confortable with it all though. I can prevent it by putting a rod/pipe/block/whatever between the tensioner pulley and the tensioner. That jams things up enough that I can remove the bolt without separating the tensioner. Still, something doesn't seem right. Am I missing something? Anyone else have this problem?
