Well, we all know how great ABS is and we all know that it isn't much help on glare ice other than to steer the car into something to avoid rear-ending the car ahead (always better to hit property than people). But when it happens it is a surprise.
Going down a slight incline on a sheet of perfect ice I braked well before the normal distance and the ABS was doing its thing but of course the car wasn't stopping. I managed to steer into the oncoming lane, no cars coming, which was in better shape and spun the car out just short of a busy intersection. The rear came around when the front tires had something to grab hold of. After collecting ourselves we went to the local State Police Station and had them report the icy street to the Highway Dept.
I consider myself lucky that; there was an open lane clear of ice, no one was coming, and I noticed the glare ice soon enough. The moral of the story is keep your driving skills from being put to sleep by electronic aids, to wit- TCS and ABS, and for those of you driving SUV's and trucks All-Wheel or four wheel drive.
Good luck and remember... be careful out there
Ted
