My 91 alarm devloped a problem where the motion detector never stopped working.

Defeating the alarm permanently was not done by losing the fuse. It requires very simple tools and a "Scotchlock" connector. (From any auto parts or electronics store, couple of bucks for 3 or 4.)

Remove the panel below the dash. (Phillips head screwdriver, unscrew the center of the "mushroom", then use a thin blade to pry the entire mushroom up. Caution note: gently, and not too cold, the mushroom might break)

The alarm is behind and below the right hand dashboard vent. It is held in by no fasteners, it simply slides into its bracket. The wiring is a16 wires in a connector about 3/8" tall and 3" wide.

The connector has a release at one side, then pivots up until the other side can be angled out.

Once removed, us the Scotchlock connector to short together the two LARGER wires in that bundle, sorry, don't have either the color codes or wire numbers. It'll be obvious which two I'm referring to when you see them.

When you go hunting a replacement, you want the 42 51 831 Alarm ECU, it's made out of YELLOW plastic to distinguish it from the earlier models. (Yours is probably already this later design.) Junkyards work too, though it might be another dead one.

BTW: The reason for this shorting is not obvious to me, but the previous owner paid an extremely good local shop to defeat the alarm, and this is what they did. I'll believe it.

Did you visit the Townsend site and try his alarm steps? You could also remove each of the door-switches (Phillips head screwdriver) and clean the contacts and the area the screw's head sits in. Generally cleaning them up with some contact cleaner is advisable. I also (once removed and holding them in my hand) vigorously cycle the plunger in and out a few dozen times to try to clean up anything inside. Easy job, about 10 minutes per door, try not to let the wires fall back in once you release them from the switch. Oh, and clean the screws too: you want them to make a really nice ground.

Hope this helped
Ben
