Have you lost your dash illumination entirely, or does it just stay at the same brightness all the time?
If you've lost the dash lights entirely, then I'd suspect the transistor drive unit. The transistor is a solid state device that controls the current flow, and therefore the brightness. I don't have manuals for a '96, but in '92 it was mounted under the facia behind the knee shield on the right-hand side (assuming a LHD car).
If the dash lights come on, but stay the same all the time, then I'd suspect the photocell. Actually, just the wiring to it. Photocells aren't the sort of thing that fail often, but wires break and connectors fail.
If you want to persue it, I recommend you get the electrical manual from the dealer. I don't know the part number, but if you go to the parts department and ask for the 3:2 Electrical systems manual for a 1996 9000, they can look it up. It will help you troubleshoot the problem, and any other electrical gremlins that come along.
Good luck!
