There are myriad things that can cause the idle problem. First are the hoses as you suspected (did you check the charcoal cannister?) and then there are things like the AMM, a poorly set base idle, and a throttle body consticted by PVC build up. I'd check the Townsend sight, they have good write ups on all of these issues.
That said, you probably could just disconnect the AIC and the car will work fine. My '87 inexplicably revs to about 2000rpm everytime I start it which is obviously bad for the engine. I've tried everything else and in the process have a rock solid cold idle but still the reving problem. Disconnecting the AIC "corrects" the situation. The two problems I would expect to encounter are on cold starts, when the engine naturally idles quite low and the AC. The low cold idle can be corrected by raising base idle a bit and finding a good compromise between a cold and warm idle. The whole AIC system is really designed to compensate for the AC which puts an extra load on the engine which is especially noticible under idle (some foreign market cars without AC didn't have AIC). When the car first starts up the AC engages and will immediatly stall the car without the AIC and will cause it to idle very low in other situations. I have an inline switch from the ACC to the AC compressor as I got sick of hitting ECON everytime I wanted to drive with the windows down. This would solve the first problem as would disconnecting the AC compressor wire entirely (it's a good idea to still run it occasionally though) The problem will naturally come in the summer when you actually want ot use the AC.
