part number 88 22 025 for 89 deg C or PN 88 17 538 for 83 deg C it mounts on the head under the water inlet fitting. just under the hoisting fitting
on the belt end of the engine. I would recommend using the 89 deg part if you are in UK. easy to replace and straight forward. you will loose about 2 litres of coolant so if due change do at same time. This controls the block coolant temp. Is a two stage unit, first stage warm minimum fluid quickly(Heater core is the heat exchanger) so you have heater function and as engine gets hotter second stage opens and allows fluid to circulate to radiator (BIG heat exchanger) and in this mode the radiator thermal switch goes to work to keep the radiator coolant tempurature regulated so I guess yes/no is appropriate answer.
