I am a Fully Qualified AutoElectrician..
This type of wiring insulation is used on most european cars. I have seen Volvos with the same problem. I thought it was the degreaser that was used to clean engines causing the Premature Failure of the insulation. I am now not so sure.. If DuPont made the Insultion for the Wiring, I have read about the Failure..
Check your Alternator out. If a Diode goes short circuit or the Inbuilt Regultaor fails, You will experience a Drain through the Stator or Rotor.
Bare Wires are only a problem if they touch a ground or another wire. I have covered some of my suspect Wiring with some convuluted tubing which is available almost anywhere.
One thing to check if your alternator is ok, Is to check the output. You can do this using any Multi Meter. Check the Voltage at the Battery while the engine is running at about 1500-2000 RPM and no accessories on. You should see 13.8 volts to 14.5 Volts. Then Turn your Headlights on to high Beam and recheck. You should see 13.5 volts.
