TCS - Temporary Disable?

The Owner's Manual for my 1993 9000 contains the following note:
"On manual transmission cars equipped with TCS, it is possible to temporarily disengage TCS control of the front wheel brakes in certain emergency situations, e.g. a car that is stuck and where full throttle application only results in low engine speed accompanied by repeated brake pulsations. In such emergency circumstances, you can temporarily disengage the TCS control of the front brakes by carefully depressing the brake pedal slightly with your left foot at the same time that the accelerator pedal is depressed. The brake pedal should only be depressed far enough to activate the brake lights (you may hear an audible click)."
This is followed by this warning:
"Using the brake pedal in conjunction with the accelerator as described about is not recommended practice. This procedure must only be used with great caution and only for the purposes of attempting to move a stationary car that has become stuck."
Has anyone tried this? Does it work? Do you risk damage to the car? Does the TCS automatically re-engage?
