From personal experience, the original parts last a long time. Holes seem to announce themselves with a mild "wuffle" and should be easy enough to spot. I replaced bits on my old 1990 9000 2-litre after 100,000 miles. On the current car, 1993 2.3T, I've had the centre box welded at the pipe joints three times now, after 94K miles, and the cat is looking very rusty but I think they all do this anyway. I have never heard of a cat failing at all - others may know different! However, we have had mild winters for many years and salty roads will speed the process up considerably. I'm replacing my system including downpipe & cat (parts from Maptun) and the cost is about £500 or $750 including carriage. The cat accounts for £200 of this: others have found them more cheaply but they seem more expensive this sinde of the pond anyway, and I wanted a complete 3" package.
