It is true the ZF box does not share sterling acolades for reliability but
to pass up a good car because it has one may could be a missed opportunity.
If one changes the fluid as recommended by Saab and doesn't abuse the box by jackrabbit starts at every light you should obtain reasonable life from the thing. Keep in mind that automatics in all cars will not give the service of a manual box and are considerably more expensive to overhaul but for the convenience factor they are a nice option. Changing the fluid every 15,000 miles or each year seems to be a good investment for extended service life. Also simple spring /governor changes are often passed over as excuses to "overhaul" a perfectly good box with a small problem. Advice here is know your tranmission man!
