Generally, O2 sensors have a service life of about 60k. Some people never change them, some, like myself, change before every bi-annual emissions test, regardless of mileage. I use the universal type, so it's under $40 US, no big deal and doesn't take too long to replace.
The Bosch part number I use is 0 258 003 913. I wouldn't rule out your Air Mass Meter as a cause of the problem, but that's about three to four times as much money (assuming you buy rebuilt/remanufactured and not new), so might as well start with the O2 sensor. It should be replaced regardless.
I noticed a very significant increase in MPG (or decrease in fuel consumption, as you may say in Europe) both times that I changed the sensor. The only thing close to that big a change in MPG (3-4 mpg on the highway) was replacing a faulting AMM, which was about the same increase in MPG (was running way too rich).
Good luck!
