Power Window Cable Broken

Hi Guys,
One of the front windows on my 1987 9000 SE just stopped working - no sudden bang or crash - just a whimper.
Removed the door panel and saw a "dangling" cable which must have been hanging on by a thread for a long time - quite frayed where broken. It seems to me that each motor/regulator assembly actually uses two cables, one for down travel and the other for up. Since the motor and regulator themselves seem fine, can anyone out there help me out with detailed instructions in how to repair this system?
I took the "back-plate" off the motor and there is a drum in there which would appear to hold the two ends of the drive cables. I don't really know how to thread the new cables or anchor them etc.
Any help would be most appreciated.
If I get it sorted, I will post a procedure because I think that this mode of failure happens on older cars.
