For what it's worth:
After years of driving 99s, 900s, and 9000s, 5 speeds and autos, mostly turbos but never an Aero, I leased a 1999 9-5 for a year and 30,000 miles. The two main differences are a MUCH stiffer chassis and a really precise automatic in the 9-5....totally different from the ZF autos found in 9000s.
My first impression on test driving the 9-5 was, "SAAB really got it right this time". Just a much more advanced and fine tuned design.
After a year, however, the lease no longer made financial sense, so I got back into a '96 9000 CS, and yes, the hatchback is nice, it is a slightly bigger car, but the quirky ZF transmission and body flex keep me planning on buying a 9-5 when the price gets below $20,000.
That's a good price on the 9-5. I would take them both out over a weekend and drive them on all different kinds of roads that you are familiar with and see if the raw power and room of the aero make up for the much more sophisticated design of the 9-5.
Good luck,
Saabhartha
