It is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to take the timing chain cover off "in-car" and put it back together properly. The cover is sandwiched between the head and the sump pan. I did take it off in-car when the timing chain sprocket shear off the Woodruff key on my '94CS and verified it to be the case. For the life of me I couldn't figure out how to put it back together "in-car". I eventually gave up. Bought a replacement engine from a yard.
Before I put the replacement engine in, I put it on a stand. Removed the sump pan. Removed the timing chain cover. Inspected thoroughly the two chains and put it back together. I made sure I seated the Woodruff key squarely in the slot on the crank shaft and tightened the H-balancer to 129 ft-lbs.
I would never remove the head unless I know I have a blown gasket. It's not worth the effort for the sake of replacing the chains.
