Here is the answer. It was the RESISTOR. I first thought the fan speed problem was the switch. I even went to the dealer and ordered the part (US $30)... which had to be special ordered. But after consulting this BBS, I started to suspect the problem was the Resistor. I was finally able to find the resitor, it is located in the fan housing... not in the evaporator housing... on the side of the fan housing facing the front of the car on the driver's side. It's a 3 inch grey piece of plastic with a wire bundle connected to it. You don't need to remove the false firewall to get to it, just the "aquarium cover". Anyway, I went to the dealer, bought the part (US $80). You don't have to crimp on a new resistor, the grey plastic part comes ready to install. I just removed the old part, unclipped the attached wire bundle, clipped the wire bundle to the new part and snapped the new part into place on the fan housing. Replaced the aquarium cover. Took me one-half hour. Problem solved. Now I can sit back and wait for the next system to malfunction in my car. That shouldn't take long.
