Studs for exhaust downpipe connection

I had an exhaust leak from the flange between the downpipe and the turbo on my 88 9000T. It turned out a couple of the nuts holding this in place were loose. I undid them to get a better look and perhaps put a lock washer on - but instead of the nuts coming off the whole studs came out. The thread on one of the studs looked in very bad shape so i was going to replace it.
First of all I thought a regular M8 bolt would work, but it wouldn't seem to screw very far in. Is this because there is some sort of interference fit like in iron pipe in plumbing work? Or do I just have bad threads that need tapping out?
If it is the former, where would I get replacement studs - I couldn't seem to find anything locally? My Mcmaster-Carr catalog had metric studs, but not with any kind of interference fit. I've resisted the dealer (my Jeep-GMC-Pontiac-VW-Volvo-Saab dealer that is) so far because it is not very convenient and it always takes at least a week ot get any parts in.
