The 1.8T is a very nice engine - 5 valves per cylinder, compact form, modern engine management. I've driven it, and find it's a great engine for those of us that like small displacement mills.
The 1.8 is about 150hp in stock form, the Saab is (I believe) 170 hp.
But it's very hard to knock the Saab engine for a few basic reasons - primarily, the Saab engine has a Proven track record of reliablity and long life. The 2.0 engine has been around since the 70's, and will ROUTINELY get 200K+ miles. Saab has been turbocharging it since 1979, and 22 years of experience is tough to beat. The VW/Audi engine just plain doesn't have the track record. It may be a good engine, but it hasn't been out long enough to prove itself.
Also, the 1.8T has a timing belt, and the Saab 2.0 has a timing chain. The chain has no replacement interval, but the 1.8 requires belt replacements.
Would I not buy a car with the 1.8T? Heck no, I think it's one of the better engines out there. I wouldn't pick or rule out a car if I were faced with a choice between those two engines - they're both good. It would be the underlying car that would force the choice.
