The symptom of a broken rubber shift coupler is that you can't go side to side. So 1st and 2nd, as well as 5th and reverse, are hard or impossible to get into. This is because the metal sides of the rubber shift coupling peel away from the rubber core when you try to rotate the shaft.
Simple inspection of the rubber shift coupling will often not be helpful, as the coupling looks normal until you try to rotate the shaft to either side to try to get to 1st/2nd or 5th/reverse, at which time you see the metal side peel away. I'm embarassed to say that I had to spend a whole hour under my '88 9kt before I figured this out.
I would suggest that you put a couple of 2 inch radiator clamps around the rubber shift coupling, or some of those plastic cable ties (use thick ones), and then try the shifter, instead of going out and buying a new rubber shift coupling right away. Good luck.
