You should see/feel better performance with an 'tuned' ECU
even without doing the exhaust mod's. However, many would
argue that the exhaust diameter increase is a prerequisite for
doing a tuned ECU. The argument is not only will the performance
be improved, but more important, EGT's will be at a better/lower
level. The tuned ECU will significantly increase EGT's above
what a normally tuned ECU will produce, at WOT. If you've ever
popped the hood on your Saab, after a brisk night-run on the highway,
and noticed the cherry red color of your turbo, then you'll appreciate
that a tuned ECU on a restrictive stock exhaust plumbing will turn
that cherry red to super-nova white! Well, maybe not quite that
hot, but I think you'll get my point. As far as turbos and exhausts
go, the bigger diameter the better. I would highly recommend
doing the whole system at once - from the downpipe all the way
back. A well designed system should give you 10 or more ponies
above what the ECU will give.
