Are you sure it's the belts?
You might be hearing the sound of a pulley bearing on its way to failure. I would focus in on the two idler pulleys on your car - one for the AC belt, one for the serpentine belt. Those pulleys do fail after a while. Maybe what's happening is the belt dressing is getting into the pulley bearings, and that quiets them down for a little while.
Grab yourself about 2 feet of hose - garden hose works well. Stick one end up to your ear, and move the other end around the engine compartment while the engine is running. Of course, don't stick the hose into a belt (and watch out for long hair, dangling necklaces, scarves, and wolverines). This makes a fine stethescope for isolating noises.
If you do need a new idler pulley, you have three choices. The most expensive is the dealer. Next, you can buy them pretty cheaply from the folks that advertise at the bottom of the page (i.e. Sobstory). Lastly, if you're really cheap, you can usually press out the old bearing, and bring it down to the autoparts store to find a replacement. They won't know it by "bearing for an '86 9000 AC idler pulley), but they can measure up the old one and find a replacement.
I usually just buy one mailorder.
