Get what you pay for.... Posted by bryan [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: SAAB has nothing to do with Boneyard ripoff. It could've, Justin VanAbrahams ![]() |
and again, I'll maintain that while the ZF's are not as durable as a lot of autoboxes out there, some people manage to get upwards of 200K miles of them...others are lucky to get 30K out of one. Usually the problem can be traced to 'loose nut behind the wheel'. And yes, you'll find the exact same transmission in saabs, volvos, bmw's, mercedes, basically ALL euro car manufacturers use ZF autoboxes. Sooo, I think you're misdirecting your frustration.
Back to your problem...a saab or townsend rebuilt ZF goes for around $1900.00. How much did you pay for your used trans? Whatever you paid, it's probably not looking like such a good deal now. Fix it once, fix it right, it's always cheaper in the long run. As you're discovering, the 'guarantee' just means they'll throw you another used trans and you're still out the labor. Did you ask what 'guarantee' means? was it in writing? if so, I'll wager a considerable sum of money that it has a specific exclusion on labor. Basically you're paying 400 bux each go around to find out if that 'money saving used transmission' even works.
And just out of curiousity, what kind of repair costs do you anticipate on ANY 14 year old European luxury sedan? Saabs are, like other high performance Euro luxury cars (benz, bmw, etc. ) high maintenance cars, but if maintained properly they are some of the longest lived cars you can buy. They're definitely NOT for everyone; I have two and my friends always oooh and ahhh and say what a nice car I think I want to get one, and I always do everything I can to talk them out of it. All they see is the nice riding roomy car....They don't see me when I'm head down/ass up buried up to the noogies on my cars every weekend on SOME project.
I bought my 88 S with 104K miles for 2900.00, and in a year and half and 30K miles, i've put over 125% of the purchase price back into the car. Regrets? no way! it runs, drives and looks perfect, and for 7K i've got a car that is a heck of a lot more satisfying to own and drive than anything i could buy for 4-5 times that amount new.
Kathy, I looked at some of your other posts. A 14 year old saab is not the car for you.
